Shape Memory Behavior of PET Foams
نویسندگان
چکیده
Shape memory properties of PET (polyethylene-terephthalate) foams have been evaluated for two different foam densities. Samples were subjected to multiple memory-recovery cycles along three different directions to measure the effect of foam anisotropy on static mechanical and shape memory properties. The memory cycle was performed by uniaxial compression tests at room temperature. Despite these severe conditions, PET foams demonstrated very good shape memory behavior with shape recovery always higher than 90%. Due to cycling, the mechanical performance of foam samples is partially reduced, mainly along the extrusion direction of the foam panels. Despite this loss of static performance, shape memory properties are only partially affected by thermo-mechanical cycles. The maximum reduction is 10% for shape fixity and 3% for shape recovery. The experimental results are particularly interesting considering that compression tests were undertaken at room temperature. Indeed, PET foams seem to be optimal candidates for self-repairing structures.

Foams prepared from shape memory polymers (SMPs) offer the potential for low density materials that can be triggered to deploy with a large volume change, unlike their solid counterparts that do so at near-constant volume. While examples of shape memory foams have been reported in the past, they have been limited to dual SMPs: those polymers featuring one switching transition between an arbitra...
متن کاملMicrowave synthesis and actuation of shape memory polycaprolactone foams with high speed
Microwave technology is a highly effective approach to fast and uniform heating. This article investigates that the microwave heating as a novel method is used to rapidly foam and actuate biocompatible and biodegradable shape memory crosslinked-polycaprolactone (c-PCL) foams. The optical microscope proves that the resulting c-PCL foams have homogenous pore structure. Mechanical behavior and sha...

A new powder metallurgy technique for creating porous NiTi is demonstrated, combining liquid phase sintering of prealloyed NiTi powders by Nb additions and pore creation by NaCl space-holders. The resulting foams exhibit well-densified NiTi–Nb walls surrounding interconnected pores created by the space-holder, with controlled fraction, size, and shape. Only small amounts of Nb (3 at.%) are need...

We describe the fabrication of porous foams with shape memory triggering at body temperature. Employing a modified porogenleaching technique, functionalized poly(3-caprolactone) (PCL) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) macromers are crosslinked via thiol–ene chemistry to generate highly porous foam scaffolds with shape memory capacity. The temperature at which shape change of these scaffolds occur...
